History: As a young chemist, Paul Pierre Duval’s life was drastically changed, when he spilled a potion that had been contaminated by some unknown organic substance on his right hand; and soon discovered, that he could transform his entire body to stone. Using this unusual twist of fate to his advantage, he quickly established himself in France as one of the most accomplished criminals.
However, he realized, since France did not have an influx of heroes to challenge him, he decided to test his luck and came to the United States, which quickly brought him into contact with the Norse God, Thor. The Norse God proved to be too much and defeated Grey Gargoyle not just once – but twice – before Grey Gargoyle returned to his simpler life of crime. This brought him into contact with Iron Man, when he had tried to steal some of Stark’s technology; but was defeated by Iron Man. He later tried to steal a compound called “Element X” which would seemingly put an end to Grey Gargoyle’s criminal career as he was accidentally shot into space.
However, A.I.M. (Advanced Idea Mechanics) rescued him; but during a fight with Captain America and Spider-Man, he would – yet again – find himself ejected into space, where this time he was rescued by a ship called Bird of Prey, which was a star-ship crewed by various aliens. He forced himself as their leader, and as luck would have it, would encounter Thor, Sif and the Warriors Three on the StarJammer (not to be confused with the Starjammers), where during the fight, Grey Gargoyle’s luck seemingly ran out again – as he appeared to die in a violent explosion.
He, in fact, survived and landed on Earth and was rescued by the Masters of Evil who sought to take down the Avengers; but again, he would find himself defeated by Wasp and Black Knight, and returned to jail.
After several battles that included fights with the Hulk, Black Widow, Captain America and Spider-Man, and seemingly being destroyed several times – one thing was for certain – Grey Gargoyle was not easy to kill.
He was next seen in the Pym Experimental Penitentiary, where prisoners were kept miniaturized. He tried to escape, with the help of Mad Thinker, but was thwarted by She-Hulk. When he did manage to escape, he was then captured by Wondra (formerly Jubilee, at the time) of the New Warriors and left for the police to arrest him (with a note on him that the New Warriors were back).
Height: 5’11”
Weight: 175 lbs. (In Human Form), 750lbs (in Grey Gargoyle form)
Eyes: Blue, White (as Grey Gargoyle)
Hair: Brown, Grey (as Grey Gargoyle)
Powers: Duval’s superhuman power is the ability to transform any object or person into stone with the touch of his right hand. The power works on people and the clothing they wear, although it would only affect a battle suit, not its wearer (for example, Iron Man).
He must wear specially treated gloves when he does not want to access his power. By touching himself with his right hand, Duval transforms himself into a living statue of stone, and seems capable of remaining in that form indefinitely. In this form, Duval has a stone-like skin providing him superhuman strength and resistance to injury, even against the rigors of deep space, and does not need to eat or breath while transformed.
Duval has also shown the ability to scale stone and brick walls by touch.
