The issue begins with Nova already in the middle of a battle against the villain known as Firefly at a West Haven Nuclear Generating Station, along the Hudson River. Firefly tries to ignite Nova, but to no avail – as Nova’s outfit allows him resistance to extreme heat and cold. Nova then grabs Firefly and dunks him into the lake, allowing the water to short circuit Firefly’s outfit – and giving Nova the edge he needs to knock him out. When Nova delivers Firefly to the local authorities, he’s told that he’s been cleared in the raid against the Air Force Warehouse, previously.
Elsewhere, Condor, Powerhouse and Diamondhead wage their war against Sphinx. Kur goes to get Sphinx so that he can join them in the battle field. Diamondhead is the first to strike at Sphinx – who catches his punch and tosses him aside all too easily. Nova stumbles across the battle and lands a punch on Condor. Condor then turns to Sphinx, gun in hand, and has it blasted away by Sphinx. Sphinx then grabs Condor by the throat, only to have Powerhouse grab him and attempt to drain him of his energy. Powerhouse manages to hit Sphinx, but Sphinx then uproots a tree and smashes it down on Powerhouse. Diamondhead tries to land a hit but is grabbed by Sphinx again – this time thrown away after being zapped by Sphinx’s eye blast. After escaping a bubble blast that Condor had encased him in, Nova then takes down Powerhouse by hitting him from the back. However, their fight continues on for a bit – with Powerhouse quickly getting the upper hand and threatening to drain Nova of all of his powers. Condor confronts Sphinx, but is gunned down by his own weapon by Kur. Disappointed, Sphinx then turns Condor into his name sake and turns him into a real bird. Sphinx surprises Powerhouse and Nova and renders them both unconscious with the intention of stealing their memories and knowledge and destroying their bodies.
