History: Very little is known about Gordon Fraley prior to becoming Puff Adder. Gordon took on the identity of Puff Adder when his mutant abilities manifested themselves. He was originally a part of Viper (Madame Hydra)’s team in an effort to infiltrate Sidewinder’s Serpent Society. He, along with Black Racer, Copperhead, and Fer-de-Lance, committed a series of robberies to garner Sidewinder’s attention. They ended up fighting Captain America (who was going by The Captain at this time), along with Nomad, Demolition Man, and Falcon and were defeated. However, their plan had worked as Sidewinder freed them after they agreed to join the Serpent Society.

They would once again fight Captain America and his allies, and this time lose. Sidewinder, disappointed by the betrayal surrendered leadership and departed, and Cobra took over, now adopting the name King Cobra. Puff Adder remained with King Cobra’s Serpent Society organization after everything had settled. During this time he developed a romantic relationship with his teammate, Anaconda. He briefly served with Doctor Octopus and his version of the Masters of Evil.

Puff Adder was among the other Serpent Society members who fell under the thrall and sway of Mephisto and began the dark practice of worshipping him as the Great Red Serpent. This continued when the new Viper, now using the moniker of Pit Viper got Serpent Society back together under the name Serpent Solution and attempted to resurrect their belief in Mephisto by gather the parts of an ancient relic. Puff Adder was seen fighting the AVENGE.R.S. in The Republic of Attinia.

He, along with the other members of Serpent Solutions, would ultimately be defeated when the AVENGE.R.S. thwarted Pit Viper’s plans and Mephisto never showed up, despite the relic and the ritual being completed.

Powers: Puff Adder’s mutant ability allow him to alter his size, and allow him to enlarge (or puff up) which makes him much stronger. This also increases his strength, stamina, and resistances to physical damage. He’s also able to breathe a corrosive, toxic gas that is strong enough to melt through metallic objects.

Note: The depiction of Puff Adder’s race varied from artist to artist. In his first appearance, he was depicted as Caucasian, but a few issues later, he was depicted as African-American, which remains his more consistent depiction to this day.
