History: Scott Washington was one of the Guardsmen who took Vance Astrovik (Marvel Boy, at the time; later Justice) into custody when Vance had been accused of the murder of his father. Though acquitted of the murder charge, Vance was found guilty of negligent homicide and willing allowed himself to be taken. During Vance’s time in the Vault, he often trained with the guards – one of them being Scott Washington, whom he soon befriended.
Scott Washington understood the benefit of training with Justice, as it allowed him (and the other Guardsmen) to practice in the event something happened with the villains breaking free of the vault; having real, on hand experience, dealing with a super powered individual. During such a riot, Vance was able to calm both sides, explaining that he had developed a friendship with Scott, and that behind the masks, everyone is human and wants equal rights.
Scott was recognized for his efforts of working with Vance and keeping the prisoners in the Vault appeased and was eventually given an assignment to guard several symbiotes – which included the Venom and Carnage symbiotes, which he was wholly familiar with. During an invasion from the symbiotes, the Venom symbiote unleashed a scream that appeared to kill the invading symbiotes and weaken the captured ones; who then merged together, which Scott deemed the hybrid. The hybrid then jumped on Scott and for a brief moment shared their minds and experience; and Scott suddenly saw something that changed his mind – that the symbiotes were not evil. He even allowed one to escape, which in the end, cost him his job with the Guardsmen.
Returning to the ghetto with his mother and brother, Derek, Scott sank into depression, having hoped that his job as the Guardsmen would provide him with enough money to get his family out of the ghetto and get his brother away from the gangs. However, Scott was forced to save his brother from a gang member named Scar, by breaking his arm; and he swore vengeance.
He got revenge shortly after, by breaking into Scott’s home and gunning down Derek, killing him instantly and leaving Scott paralyzed. When Justice paid Scott a visit, Scott was venomously furious about how his life had turned out and the death of his brother.
A short while later, the symbiote Hybrid had located Scott. The symbiotes detected Scott’s desire for revenge and were concerned, but merged with him regardless. Scott as Hybrid began to terrorize the gang filled streets and tracked down the gang member who gunned down his brother and Scott and crippled him. Before he could deliver the killing blow, the symbiotes left Scott – and now vulnerable and cripple again, he was exposed, so the Hybrid symbiote rejoined with Scott just as Justice arrived. Justice could tell it had been Scott and talked him down; allowing Scott to use Hybrid’s unique ability to inject a piece of itself into people to track them, similar to Spider-Man’s “spider tracker.”
They track the gang down after Scott explains that they have his Guardsmen blueprints and confront the gang, revealing that one of the members was none other than Dwight, Derek’s best friend, who explained he was afraid he would be targeted next if he didn’t join the gang. Scott, seeing Dwight surrender his weapon and remove the gang colors, realized that the problem was how the gangs were at war with one another, selling drugs, and simply doing everything to ruin one another. He tried to reason with the gang but they would not listen.
Scott would next come into contact with The Jury, and be captured. They attempted to separate the symbiote from the host, without realizing who the host was. During the process they caught a glimpse of Scott’s face and were stunned. Justice (Vance), Turbo and Alex Power showed up to help Scott, and chaos erupted, but eventually calmed down. Justice offered Hybrid a position on the New Warriors, but Hybrid declined for the moment, saying he wanted to focus on clearing up his neighborhood first. Justice assured him that the offer was always on the table.
During Civil War, Hybrid had been considered a potential recruit for The Initiative.
However, neither Scott nor Hybrid would never get the chance to join the Initiative or the New Warriors, as Venom began tracking down the other symbiotes, seeking out Hybrid first. He found him, stunned him with an electric blast; and despite knowing that Scott was behind the Hybrid and a hero, Venom shot and killed him. The symbiotes were captured individually and used to eventually fight Carnage.
Height: 5’9″
Weight: 172 lbs.
Eyes: Brown
Hair: Black
Powers: The merging with the symbiotes allowed Scott Washington to overcome his inability to walk after suffering a gunshot wound that had left him paralyzed. It did not heal the spinal damage (if the symbiote left Scott, he would once again be paralyzed) but simply controlled his movement to supersede his inability to walk.
He was also able to create tendrils, similar to that seen by Venom and Carnage, that could be used to grab, grip, even catch and stop bullets. He was also able to heal portions of the tendrils as weapons (which would dissolve after several hours). He also used this ability to create a “tracker.” He was also able to create weapons (such as hammers and maces) that were “solid” and struck as if made of steel; as well as creating razor sharp weapons capable of cutting through steel. While in the symbiote, he could absorb materials (such as Spider-Man’s webbing) and not be affected.
He could extend the tendrils to create a wing like structure that would allow him to fly great distances of speeds up to 150 miles per hour. The symbiote also granted him super human strength that allowed him to lift 10 tons.
Among the other abilities he had, was spitting a highly acidic form of the symbiote that could cause serious damage (and eat through stone and steel). He also had the ability to be cloaked from Spider-Man’s “Spider-Sense” ability. He could also, similar to the other symbiotes, climb walls and shoot webbing from which he could swing from. And finally, he could use the symbiote to “disguise” himself and appear as however he wanted.
The symbiote possessed a weakness to intense heat and sound.
