History: Rico had just come to the Springdale High School, where he was immediately making a good impression. He started the same day that a substitute teacher named Mr. Huggins had started teaching in the same class that both he and Robbie Baldwin were in. The original teacher, Mr. Plant, had an appendix rupture (which was later suspected to be triggered by Mr. Huggins, who had been tracking Rico down, and needed to get close to him). When Rico learned that the original teacher was out, and that Mr. Huggins was a substitute, he grew suspicious at first, but the thought passed. Once outside, Rico engaged with the others, preparing to run track, when Robbie came out. Rico offered to tutor Robbie. When Robbie asked if it would be at Rico’s house, Rico quickly declined and said that they would need to ask Mr. Huggins if they could stay after school in his classroom; to which Mr. Huggins agreed. Robbie went there after school and overheard Mr. Huggins and an assistant named Bliss, talking about tranquilizing a target when they came in the room; and Robbie assumed it was him; but Rico overheard them too and fled. Robbie, as Masked Marvel runs into Rico – who has also changed – and calling himself Freak of Nature. Rico explains that he has been on the run for many weeks now, and that this organization has been chasing him. The Masked Marvel agrees to help Rico, and defeats both Mr. Huggins and his assistant, Bliss. When he returns to where he had left Freak of Nature, he was gone. Robbie got a note in class, several weeks later when Mr. Plant returned, which was from Rico that said he would try to stay in contact, when he could.

Tony Stark considered Freak of Nature as a potential for the Initiative recruit.
