The issue begins a century ago in London, where a doctor is leaving to resume his business in America. It suggests that this doctor is possibly none other than the infamous Jack the Ripper, whose identity has never been revealed. In America, he continues his murdering spree, and buries the bodies at a nearby construction site. One night however, his murder spree comes to an end, as he’s burying a body and one of the beams collapses, burying both murderer and victim beneath the rubble.

That site happens to be where none other than the Holy Ghost Church would eventually be constructed; the Church of Father Francis Delgado, and the current sanctuary of the dynamic duo of Cloak and Dagger in modern times.

Speaking of Cloak & Dagger, we see them surveying a scene in New York, where Dagger seems that everything is fine and that there seems to be no one who needs to be captured or punished; but Cloak points to three teenagers, one of them with a diamond necklace being pulled out of their pocket and giving it to the girl that’s with them; when suddenly several men and women draw weapons and begin to move in on the teenagers. Cloak assumes that the teenagers are about to be robbed, and leap into action. Dagger uses her light knives to stun the would be muggers; while Cloak then pulls them into the shroud of the darkness, where each of them suffers from their greatest fears. Dagger notices that one of their wallets had fallen and looks and notices that they were undercover officers seeking to bust these teens who had been targeting and stealing from jewellery stores. Dagger yells at Cloak to release them and uses her healing light to try and undo what’s been done. She yells at Cloak and his inability to judge people, always assuming the worse in people, just because he needs to feed on light. She then runs off.

She makes it to the Holy Ghost Church, where she explains to Father Francis what had happened; but realizes she may have been hasty in her words. She asks Father Francis to wake her if Cloak comes back, but she needs to rest from using her light on the officers to undo what Cloak had done to them. Father Francis curses Cloak as a demon, mentally, and continues the idea of finding a way to perform an exorcism on Cloak and expel him and free Dagger from his evil clutches.

Cloak roams through the city, and comes across a woman being attacked by a mugger but takes no action; questioning his ability to judge people, and that perhaps the woman is the one who is evil and the man is defending himself. Cloak leaves, but a green mist seeps out of his cloak’s shadows; and a figure takes form and slits the throat of the man, and the woman escapes. The misty figure takes the man’s trench coat and hat and laughs about being free again; but as it turns out, he is being given “life” through the demon inside of Cloak’s shadows, known as Predator.

The next day, Father Francis shows Dagger a newspaper that speaks of a mugger’s life that had their life sucked from them; and the woman had witnessed a man in a large cloak before all of this happened. Dagger (with Father Francis’ urging) believes that this appears to be the work of Cloak; but that he had not been one for killing the guilty before.

Cloak continues to wander the city endlessly, when suddenly the green mist envelopes him; and while others around him seem to suddenly change into their 1800 counterparts, he remains the same. The green mist, now being called The Ripper, kills several other people and moves on; and when he does, reality seems to return and Cloak is left standing near the bodies of several victims who have had their life drained from them.

Cloak begins to question his sanity, and Dagger finally catches up to him, believing he’s responsible for the recent string of murders, where people have had their life – and their light – drained from them. Cloak pleads with Dagger to kill him; that he’s gone insane and can’t believe the things he has done (now convinced that he is indeed the one responsible as well). Dagger unleashes all the light that has been building up inside of her, after days of not having Cloak siphon it off – and the demon inside of Cloak’s shadows initially welcomes it – but then realizes it’s too much and is forced to flee. This turns Cloak back into Tyrone. As he looks up he can see the misty figure of Ripper approaching Dagger, who has collapsed to her knees, exhausted. Tyrone wills the portal inside of him to open, and he once again becomes Cloak and pulls the Ripper inside. Dagger sees this and pursues the Ripper into Cloak’s shadows to put an end to him.

She blasts both the demon and the Ripper with all the light she has left, before leaping back out of Cloak and tells him to close the portal, which he does. She apologizes to Cloak for believing he had done all the vile murders, and they agree to support each other going forward.

There is an epilogue, where the other Council Members of the Church have called the ambulance to take Father Francis away, because he was exhibiting signs of insanity. They then close the Church of the Holy Ghost down; unaware that Cloak & Dagger will continue to use it as their own sanctuary.
