First Appearance: Power Pack #1 (Lightspeed), Power Pack #27 (as Molecula),
History: The Powers children (Alex, Julie, Jack and Katie) all received their powers from Aelfyre Whitemane, a dying Kymellian noble, who bestowed power to them to help saved their world.
Julie gained the ability to fly at incredible speeds, with a rainbow that would trail behind her. The limits of Julie’s speed are unknown, as well as the reason a rainbow is generated as a trail behind her when she uses her ability.
The Kymellian’s ship, a smartship named Friday, also provided costumes for the team; created from unstable molecules (similar to that developed by Reed Richards), the costumes exist – according to Friday – in an area known as “Elsewhere” – and can be summoned to appear by using the command word (“Costumes on”).
As a member of Power Pack, Julie and her siblings, often found themselves battling an alien species known as Snarks who believed in the “survival of the fittest – by any means possible.” This included one of the female Snarks by the name of Maraud trying to siphon the powers of Power Pack into her own son, Jakal to become the rightful ruler of the Snarks and lead them to a war they could not lose. However, Jakal lose control of the power – and when the powers returned – they’d not returned to the original members of Power Pack in the same manner – Jack had gained his brother’s power – the ability to control gravity; Julie, who original could move at incredible speeds with a rainbow trail suddenly had gained Alex’s power; Katie, who once could absorb things and emit energy balls suddenly had Julie’s power; and Alex had suddenly had Katie’s power.
Their powers would switch again, once again, thanks to battling Maraud later – when Julie suddenly regained her original powers; Alex gained Jack’s powers to turn to clouds; Jack gained Katie’s powers to absorb and emit energy balls; and Katie gained Alex’s original powers of controlling gravity. Their powers would switch one more time, returning to each of their original powers (Julie with the speed and rainbow; Katie with the absorbing and energy balls; Alex with the gravity; and Jack with the clouds).
Among the Powers children, Julie was the most book smart among them, often seeing carrying books (not just to school), quoting books, and genuinely often expressed concern about her grades. During fights, Julie also expressed a natural, maternal nature, especially where her youngest sibling, Katie was involved.
Julie, along with the rest of Power Pack, would eventually meet another Kymellian named Kofi and have several adventures with him, including battling the Brood on multiple occasions as well as meeting a Snark named Princess Djinna, who was also young but not war-bound like the majority of her race. She and her mother, Djenteel, strived for peace and worked with Emperor Bhadsha to make that peace a reality.
As she grew older, she had wanted to put her powers behind her and try and lead a normal life. She met a group of other heroes who called themselves “The Loners” who had a similar attitude of wanting to put the superhero business behind them. Julie, along with several members from The Loners, would eventually end up at the Avengers Academy after the events of Civil War and it was there she met Karolina Dean, who like Julie, had a signature power that imitated a “rainbow effect.” The two of them flirted, and eventually went out on a date, before committing to one another. However, that relationship would come to an end when Julie felt that Karolina wasn’t attentive to her.
Julie spiraled into depression, and her grades also plummeted. She grew more depressed when the tabloids had published a photo of Karolina and Nico Minoru, another woman who’d been a part of the Runaway, had kissed.
When things seemed to be at their darkest hour, Julie was suddenly contacted by Alex Power, her brother, who begged her for her help. She agreed – but wasn’t given time to change, and she found herself on a strange world – and in a battle, she used her powers to save hundreds of lives. When everything was said and done, she returned to Alex’s room and explained all that had happened; from coming out as bisexual, to her grades, to her fear that she was soon to be homeless, because she couldn’t bear being a failure and returning home.
Alex offered her a place in the Future Foundation team, which she accepted.
Height: 5’4?
Weight: 110 lbs.
Eyes: Blue
Hair: Strawberry Blond (formerly), Blond
Powers: Julie, as Lightspeed, had the ability to fly up to supersonic speeds (whose limits had not been fully tested to see what her maximum speed is – but she has reached speeds of 800 mph – faster than the speed of sound), while creating a stream of refracted light that appears to mimic a rainbow-like trail. She would eventually learn how to even hover, without the need to move forward. The rainbow-like trail that follows Julie when she uses her power, she’s also learned to use; she’s used it to cushion falls of others, stand on it, and even create it like a hammock. This speed ability has also allowed her to seemingly teleport, without any effort, allowing her to cover create distances in a burst of pink light.
