The issue begins with Nova, attempting to communicate with The Watcher. The Watcher, however, silently points into the cosmos. Nova explains that he’s new at this and could use a hint; The Watcher’s eyes suddenly reflect a massive armada of space ships. Sam flies back home, thinking he will get the Avengers to handle the oncoming armada. When he gets home, his mother yells at him about not coming home. Sam explains that he was looking around in the garage for clues where his father might have gone, and that he must have fallen asleep. His mother explains, that before Sam was born, that his father would frequently take these trips and be gone for a long time. Sam asks if there’s something she hasn’t told him – but she returns with the same question, asking if there’s something Sam hasn’t told her. She adds, “If there’s something you want to tell me, you can. Your father always told me. You can too.”
Sam keeps silent, and goes outside to the garage and talks to the helmet, hoping his father could some how communicate with him. While he’s out there, Rocket Raccoon and Gamora show up. Sam demands to know what happened to his father, but Rocket and Gamora insist that Sam get ready to be trained. Sam states that he never asked for this and that they should go get the other Nova that was an Avenger or something. Gamora explains that the Nova he speaks of, is Rich Rider, who sacrificed himself for the greater good. Sam begins training with Rocket Raccoon and Gamora. After the training, they explain that the Chitauri are an alien race that thrives on war and is headed for Earth. He explains that he has seen the alien armada, and has a general idea – but Rocket and Gamora point out that the helmet has logged the coordinates and that he could space jump there.
After explaining what Space Jumping is – Nova does so and appears just by Jupiter, right in front of the Chitauri armada and is immediately fired upon!
