History: Very little is known about the original Asylum, who was a part of Psionex. Like the Asylum that would take her moniker after her, the original Asylum was also from a mental hospital for reasons unknown, before being used by Genetech for their research in creating superhuman beings. It is unknown if her powers developed as a result of Genetech’s experiments on her; but Asylum gained the ability to transform her body into non-corporeal mists that were originally believed to be tied to the Darkforce Dimension. Anyone engulfed in Asylum’s mists would be devoured by a bombardment of mental attacks exposing their greatest fears.

Asylum is unable to speak, though it’s unknown if this was the case before her transformation or not. She, like most of Psionex, seemed to be thrilled by the idea of invoking pain in others. She was considered the ‘leader’ of Psionex for all intents and purposes, during her time with them. However, Psionex eventually broke away from Genetech and Asylum.

During a battle with the New Warriors, it was revealed that the ‘dark energy’ that Asylum controlled was not tied to the ‘Darkforce’ dimension since it was immune to Firestar’s blasts (which have historically disrupted ‘Darkforce’ energy). When Speedball leaped inside Asylum’s non-corporeal body and ‘expanded’ his kinetic energy, causing Asylum to explode; only her mask remained, falling to the floor. After that incident, she has not been seen or heard from again, her ultimate fate, yet unknown.

Later, Henrique would escape the Darkforce dimension through the original Asylum’s mask and adopt it for his own.

Later still, an Asylum resembling the original (which was last seen to have exploded), appears to be standing with Psionex during the Initiative and becomes a part of the Maryland team. It’s unknown if it’s the same Asylum, or possibly a third Asylum to take the name. It’s assumed to be the original, because unlike the second Asylum who took the mask; Henrique had a different look. The Asylum seen standing with Psionex appears to be the original, in how she/he looks.

Powers: Asylum’s powers were originally thought to be tied to the Darkforce Dimension, but it was later revealed that that information was incorrect, when Asylum was immune to Firestar’s attack (which had historically disturbed Darkforce energy). Anyone engulfed in Asylum’s mist is subject to a mental assaults with a twisted version of an inner truth or an inner lie.
