The issue opens up with Nova flying around being concerned that he’s failing Math and Science in High School – when suddenly the sky goes completely black and he’s struck by an unseen beam. The person reveals himself as the sinister Blackout! Nova says he is going to repay Blackout for the sneak attack – but Blackout gets the best of him, encasing him within a block of solid black light.
Nova manages to get free of it, but not before Blackout has made his escape. Nova then realizes the time and zips back to school with five minutes to spare. The scene shifts back to Blackout who has returned to the scene of the crime to break and enter into the office of Croit. The man named Marcus Daniels, better known as Blackout, is discovered by Croit and his assistant. Blackout then turns their bodies to “solid living black light” until he’s ready for them. Blackout explains how he had learned Croit was defrauding the government, but had made it so that it appeared Marcus had done it. Croit offered Marcus a chance to drop the charges against him if Marcus would be the guinea pig for some experiments. Croit explained that they had been experimenting on harnessing the powers of a black star and that they thought they discovered a way of reducing its incredible output to an infinitesimal degree and it would be a way to end all forms of disease. However, it did not work – instead Marcus had become a living generator of the black star’s power. Croit had hoped to use him further, but Marcus fled and learned to use his powers – becoming Blackout.
We cut to Nova who had just left a basketball game with Ginger and excuses himself – noticing that it had gotten dark by four and that rain had begun pouring down when the forecast had said that the sunset would be clear and happen at seven. Nova finds Blackout, whose plan is to merge with the light spectrum and correct what has happened to him. Nova and Blackout begin fighting – and Blackout keeps the upper hand until Nova fights back and lands a solid punch, knocking Blackout onto the Stabilizer that he had hoped to use to correct his condition. A lightning bolt strikes him and the stabilizer making it so that Blackout’s atoms merge with the light – and slowly, he fades away into nothingness.
