History: Burchell’s life, before becoming Cottonmouth and becoming a member of Serpent Society is not well documented. He had already established himself as a criminal throughout Alabama before being recruited and joining Serpent Society. He was recruited by Sidewinder to join – and together, they went before several larger criminal organizations and offered themselves up as assassins.

One of their first missions for A.I.M. was to find and kill the original M.O.D.O.K. Serpent Society successfully tracked down M.O.D.O.K. and during the fight, drew the attention of Steve Rogers, better known as Captain America. Though Captain America had managed to defeat several members of the Serpent Society, both Cottonmouth and Deathadder, were successful in their mission in assassinating M.O.D.O.K.

Cottonmouth was one of the members of the Serpent Society to attack Porcupine, who alerted Captain America to their presence. Porcupine would accidentally be killed during that fight, by a self inflicted wound that took his life, when he fell upon his own costume (enraged that Serpent Society had damaged it) and the quill from his costume was enough to kill him. The members of Serpent Society who partook in this were found and defeated by Captain America.

When Madame Hydra, now using the moniker, Viper, came to take over Serpent Society, Cottonmouth originally remained loyal to Sidewinder – but when she poisoned Cottonmouth, in an effort to live, he agreed to serve her. He would go on to attack Diamondback, who had stood against Viper, and had gone back to rescue Sidewinder. The leadership would change, after Viper was defeated by Captain America, with Cobra taking over after Sidewinder had said he wanted nothing to do with them – having felt betrayed. Cobra took up the name King Cobra, and Cottonmouth remained on the team.

Cottonmouth and other members of Serpent Society, fell under the sway of Mephisto, and had gone on a bloodthirsty rage, until defeated by Nighthawk. Cottonmouth and the reset of Serpent Society would surface again, this time following the new Viper, who adopted the name Pit Viper and attempted to reassemble an ancient relic and ritual to bring forth Mephisto once more.

Powers: Cottonmouth’s bionic jaw can dislocate far enough to fit a human head, and possesses sufficient strength to deform soft iron and crush cinderblock. His teeth are made of steel.

Note: His real name was revealed in the Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe A to Z Hardcover Vol. 10. However, in Dragon magazine #105, Cottonmouth’s name is stated to be Quincy McIver, and Bushmaster’s name has not been revealed. This is a typo. Bushmaster’s name is Quincy McIver. Cottonmouth’s name, which had not been revealed when Dragon #105 (January, 1986), is Burchell Clemens.
