The Evolutionaries have an origin that dates prior to mankind. They were a race that had been hunted until the Eternal known as Phastos took pity on them and restored their injured members and crafted armor for them, that had been powered by cosmic rays. He also took the time to use nano-technology to increase their intelligence and awareness, as well as giving them the ability to “hibernate” between periods of evolution.
They eventually appeared before the X-Men and assured them that they were there to ensure the survival of the Homo Superior (mutants). They eventually sought out Magneto, seeing him as the leader of all Homo Superior. The Evolutionaries abducted Emma Frost and connected her to Cerebro so that she could connect to the mind of every mutant across the planet. They were confronted by the X-Men and defeated; but the Evolutionaries wiped the X-Men’s memories of their existence.
The Evolutionaries appeared again to engage against the Neo, who they deemed a threat to Homo Superiors. The X-Men fought them, once again – when the Evolutionaries said that the root of the problem was Homo Sapiens, and they would commence with cleansing them from the world. During the fight – the mutants were linked to Cyclops’ mind, which unlocked and restored the memory of the Evolutionaries. The Evolutionaries were once again forced to flee, but swore they’d one day return to kill Cyclops.
The next time they appeared, they glowed golden rather than blue, having been “evolved” by the High Evolutionary himself. They decided to eradicate anyone they deemed to be “tainted” – beginning with Morlocks and then going after the casters and members of Salem’s Seven, where they were opposed and defeated by the New Warriors.
