The Turbo Series that almost was…

… not sure how almost it was, but figured I’d try that click-bait, catchy, overly dramatic title. But really, this is about a Turbo series that could have seen the light of the day at the hands of Evan Skolnick!

This came about because I’d asked on the New Warriors Facebook Group (Note: You won’t be able to see the post unless you’re a member – so come join us!)

Which member – or former member – of the New Warriors do you wish could have their own 12 issue limited series (that hasn’t already had an at LEAST 4 issue limited series – so this rules out: Night Thrasher, Nova, Firestar, Justice and Speedball, off the top of my head)…?

And quite a few people voiced an interest in Turbo. And I feel absolutely blessed that Evan (and Fabian) are both members of the group – and have engaged with us on there! Well, Evan, seeing so many responses to the interest in Turbo said…

It sure warms my heart to see all these votes for a TURBO limited series! Maybe I should dust off that 1989 proposal. I’m sure it’s around here somewhere…

– Evan Skolnick

A week later, Evan came back with something special (and I ensured to get his permission to post it here)…

You can see a tease of the two characters right there, right?

Well, guess what – you don’t need to strain your eyes…

Because here it is…

And now you’re thinking – that freaking LOOKS AMAZING… and you can see some text behind the characters, right? Wondering what it says?

No need to try and strain your eyes…

Who else wants to see this? Maybe a story told in the past, when they first got the Torpedo outfit? Since some of this got fleshed out in New Warriors…

I had to pick up my jaw when I saw this extra piece he posted… this art… is remarkable…

So when it came up asking how his plot was similar to what Fabian used in New Warriors…

Yes, the first version of this proposal was in 1989. But as you know, it dragged on for years, via different angles and through multiple proposals.

Eventually, Fabian kindly asked our permission to introduce Turbo in the pages of NEW WARRIORS — it was his idea. The cover story for this request was that he wanted to expand the roster in the eventual hopes of spinning off another title. But I suspect Fabian was really just being his usual nice guy who wants to help end his friends’ prolonged suffering.

– Evan Skolnick

To which Fabian replied (jokingly – can I mention how blessed I feel to have them both on the group?!?) –

IT WAS NOT THAT AT ALL! I JUST KNEW THAT IF I USED TURBO IN THE WARRIORS EVERYONE WOULD THINK IT WAS MY IDEA! MINE! ALL MINE I TELL YOU!!!

~ Fabian Nicieza

So there you go! Totally worth clicking the clicky-baity title, am I right?

All new NIGHT THRASHER series coming in Feb 2024?

It would appear so.

Source of information found here.

Official press release below:

Night Thrasher is remembered for his super cool adventures throughout the ‘90s in both his solo series and as a core member of the New Warriors. Now, he’s back as a headlining hero in this four-issue limited series! Leaving the ‘90s behind and entering an exciting new era, Night Thrasher will adopt a brand-new look, rekindle his relationship with Silhouette, and clash with an all-new archenemy! Holtham, known for his work in both comics and TV series including Cloak and Dagger and Jessica Jones, will team up with acclaimed artist Nelson Dániel to steer this fan-favorite hero in a bold new direction.

It’s time to thrash the night! The death of a loved one draws Dwayne Taylor back to New York City, though his days as Night Thrasher are long over. But Dwayne finds the past difficult to outrun when Silhouette, his ex-teammate from the New Warriors, seeks his help against a new criminal called The O.G. And the mystery of the O.G.’s true identity and what’s to come will change Night Thrasher’s legacy forever!

Discussing the series with host Angélique Roché, Holtham said, “Obviously, there’s a ton of nineties nostalgia floating around. It feels like a dude on a skateboard is always going to be cool and fun. I’m from the nineties and I have aged and there’s a lot in this that is about, ‘What’s your legacy? What have you left behind?,’ especially because we haven’t seen him for a while. He had to go on a journey of self-discovery and hung out other places for a while to process that ‘I was dead then I wasn’t dead.’ And then, ‘What’s the world like?’ It’s mostly about him coming home to deal with the crap that he has not dealt with.”

Look for Night Thrasher #1 to arrive in stores and digitally on Wednesday, February 14th.

Happy Birthday to Bill Mantlo!

Happy Birthday to Bill Mantlo!

In 1981, he co-created Cloak and Dagger, and went on to write many of their adventures in the ’80s.

Bill wrote many other comics for Marvel throughout the ’70s and ’80s, including Incredible Hulk, Spectacular Spider-Man, and a celebrated run of Rom the Spaceknight. He also co-created Rocket Raccoon. In the late ’80s, he began transitioning out of comics and became a public defender for the Legal Aid Society non-profit organization. In the early ’90s, he was left comatose from a hit and run incident. He regained consciousness but the accident left him with severe brain damage. In 2014, Marvel Studios arranged to cover Bill’s in-home care expenses through a compensation package for Rocket Raccoon, who starred in the Guardians of the Galaxy movies.

Need I say it? Corey Blake of New Warriors Continuity Conundrum with his incredible calendar remembered the above.

I am going to share something I previously shared on my other site, The Comic Relief Podcast.

If you don’t know about Bill Mantlo, let me share this:

On July 17, 1992, Mantlo was struck by a car while rollerblading. The driver of the car fled the scene and was never identified. Mantlo suffered severe head trauma. His activities of daily living are severely curtailed and he resides in a healthcare facility where he receives full-time care.

Mantlo’s brother describes the injury; “Bill is, and has been, trapped in a world of confusion and despair since his accident. The cognitive deficits he suffered have left him unable to reason or understand his situation, and he struggles daily to maintain any control over his own mind. For someone with his intellect and imagination, this was the absolute worst type of injury that could ever have happened to him.”

In 2007, Yurkovich released the benefit book Mantlo: A Life in Comics, with all proceeds from the book donated to Mantlo’s brother and caregiver, Michael Mantlo, to help toward the costs of maintaining Mantlo’s care. In addition, on December 6, 2007, the Portland, Oregon, comic-book shop Floating World Comics sponsored “Spacenight: A Tribute to Bill Mantlo”, an art show consisting almost entirely of various artists’ interpretations of Rom, to help raise funds for Mantlo’s care. Throughout December 2010, Floating World Comics sponsored “Spacenite2”, also featuring artists’ interpretations of Rom, with all proceeds going to Mantlo’s care and an art auction at the end of December 2010.

In 2014, Mantlo was granted a private preview screening by Marvel Entertainment and Walt Disney Pictures of the critically acclaimed and successful Marvel Cinematic Universe film, Guardians of the Galaxy, which prominently features his creation, Rocket Raccoon, as a principal character. According to his brother, Michael Mantlo, Bill was pleased with the adaptation (which credits him by name as the character’s co-creator) and considered the occasion a happy day for himself and his family.

Cards, letters and drawings can be sent to Bill Mantlo:
