Marvel MMO Using Unreal Engine.

Gazillion Entertainment announces it has licensed Epic Games’ award-winning Unreal Engine 3 (UE3) to power its highly anticipated, free-to-play “Marvel Heroes” massively multiplayer online (MMO) game for PC. Under the licensing agreement, Gazillion, through its Secret Identity Studios, is using the cutting-edge Unreal Engine toolset to develop a premier entertainment experience that allows players to take on the roles of revered characters such as Captain America, Iron Man and Spider-Man as they play through events of the Marvel Universe.

“We love Unreal Engine 3’s streaming system. It’s made our entire technical approach possible and is easy to work with,” said Jeff Lind, studio director of Gazillion’s Secret Identity Studios. “We also love the flexibility we get from the actor components, which have empowered us to make all kinds of customizations without sacrificing the built-in features of the engine.”

Secret Identity Studios Art Director Josh Book added, “Our artists love the Unreal Content Browser, the visual art pipeline, and how functional UE3 is with different 3D packages. We had assets in the game within hours of starting work with the engine. In addition, Unreal Lightmass is a very advanced global illumination tool that has helped push the look of our game further than we thought it could go.”

“Capturing the distinctive moments of such revered fiction within a game environment is no small task, and it’s critical to use the very best tools and technology to deliver the production values fans expect,” said Joe Kreiner, North American licensing manager, Epic Games. “Having grown up with Marvel’s iconic heroes and villains, we’re really honored to help Gazillion and Secret Identity achieve their creative vision and quality bar for the game.”

Acting as the keystone of the Marvel Universe block, “Ultimate Spider-Man” features a teenage Peter Parker juggling the typical growing pains of high-school with the not-so-typical growing pains of being a super hero. As the newest member of Nick Fury’s S.H.I.E.L.D. organization, Peter finds himself on a team with four other teenage super heroes.

Produced by Marvel Animation, the series’ award-winning creative team includes Joe Quesada (Marvel’s CCO), Paul Dini (“Batman: The Animated Series,” “Lost”), the creative powerhouse Man of Action Studios (creators of “Ben 10” and “Generator Rex”), comprised of lauded creators Joe Casey, Joe Kelly, Duncan Rouleau and Steven T. Seagle; and Brian Michael Bendis (visionary behind Marvel’s ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN comic series).

The voice cast includes Drake Bell (“Superhero,” “Drake & Josh”) as Peter Parker/Spider-Man, Chi McBride (“Boston Public,” “Pushing Daisies”) as Nick Fury, JK Simmons (“Spider-Man”) as J. Jonah Jameson, Stan Lee (“Spider-Man”) as Stan the Janitor, Clark Gregg (“Iron Man,” “Thor,” “Marvel’s The Avengers”) as Agent Coulson and Steven Weber (“Wings”) as Norman Osborn.

Ultimate Spider-Man April 1st on Disney XD … With Nova!

From Here:

Spider-Man is getting yet another TV incarnation. But this time he’s teaming with some other lessser-known Marvel characters whose presence will surely please some Marvel comics fans.

The announcement was made today by Gary Marsh, President and Chief Creative Officer, Disney Channels Worldwide, at the Television Critics Association Press Tour in Pasadena, Calif.

In the “Ultimate Spider-Man” universe, Peter Parker is a teenager. And while he’ll face some recognizable Spider-Man villains, he’ll also get some help. Spidey is working with Nick Fury’s Shield team, which includes White Tiger, Power Man, Iron Fist and Nova.

Yup, Nova.

I’m super psyched that the cosmic hero who has had a recent renaissance in the Marvel world will be getting some on-screen exposure. I’ve long thought an animated Nova series had potential. And this could be a step in that direction.

“Ultimate Spider-Man” will be part of the new Marvel Universe block of programming that will debut April 1 on Disney XD. The second season of Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes also will be part of that block.

UPDATE: A release from the network this afternoon said that Nova, White Tiger, Iron Fist and Power Man also will be teenagers in this version. And a short trailer of the series shown to us this morning revealed that Whit Tiger we’ll see will be the female hero currently donning the costume in the comics.

The voice actors for those four supporting roles were not announced. Drake Bell (“Superhero,” “Drake & Josh”) voices Peter Parker/Spider-Man, Chi McBride (“Boston Public,” “Pushing Daisies”) is Nick Fury, JK Simmons (“Spider-Man”) is J. Jonah Jameson, Stan Lee (“Spider-Man”) as Stan the Janitor, Clark Gregg (“Iron Man”, “Thor,” “The Avengers”) is Agent Coulson and Steven Weber (“Wings”) voices Norman Osborn.

Marvel Remembers Joe Simon.

Taken from Marvel Remembers Joe Simon:

Marvel Remembers Joe Simon
Looking back on the life and career of a comic book legend.
Posted Dec 15, 2011

By Jim Beard

Marvel Comics notes the passing of comics legend Joe Simon, industry architect and co-creator of one of Marvel’s most exciting and enduring characters, Captain America. Simon passed away from natural causes in his home on Wednesday, December 14, 2011. He was 98 years old, and was surrounded by his family.

Newsprint flowed through Simon’s veins early in life as the newspapers provided the young artist-writer with his first, real job experience and avenues for future creative growth. Born and raised in Rochester, New York, he first worked on his high school newspaper as its art director, then graduated to several real-world papers. There, Simon handled not only production assignments, but also provided editorial cartoons throughout the 1930s.

Eventually drifting into freelance work, the young Simon found his way into the industry that he’d make his most important mark on when he went to work for Funnies, Inc., a company that provided comic stories to other publishers. There he created his first super hero, the Fiery Mask for Marvel’s predecessor Timely Comics, and met a fellow creator, one Jack Kirby.

Simon and Kirby hit it off and soon became an inseparable creative duo. Simon’s sense of business and design coupled with Kirby’s raw drawing talent created a team that could take on the world. After a few introductory comic book gigs together, the two young men made their way to Timely and there began to build what would become one of their signature creations: Captain America, the Sentinel of Liberty.

Simon, Timely’s very first editor, and Kirby, the company’s new art director, steered their patriotic hero through the first ten issues of his title, CAPTAIN AMERICA COMICS, but Simon’s keen eye for business kept the team on the lookout for even more possibilities. Soon, Simon and Kirby left Timely for other companies, such as National, Harvey, Crestwood and their very own firm, Mainline Productions. World War II interrupted Simon’s creative flow for a while, but once he returned from service in the US Coast Guard – where he created an actual Coast Guard comic – the ambitious young man threw himself back into his work.

The 1950s changes in comic books meant the dissolution of the Simon and Kirby team, but Simon himself never stopped working. He focused on commercial art at first, but the siren call of comics brought him back into the industry where he spent many more years creating stories and characters for different publishers, and even re-teamed with his old partner Jack Kirby for a few more four-color adventures.

In more recent times, Simon thrilled to seeing his creation Captain America finally take his place among other Marvel heroes on the silver screen in 2011’s “Captain America: The First Avenger” feature film. It stands as a proud moment that rounded out a lengthy and important career for the trail-blazing Joe Simon.
