New Warriors #1 Review By: Russell Davis

I enjoyed the book greatly. It moved along well, did a good job introducing characters and even managed to give a little personality to everyone in a very small window of pages.

I love the Villain choice. Wont spoil anything but I like him as a not outright evil bad guy.

My biggest complaint is the Speedball stuff. I’m sorry he isn’t the same character he was in his book or the new warriors. Even when it was early in the series he wasn’t stupid about picking fights. Where is all the character development, from Avengers academy.

Vance was handled acceptably, i was worried but the conversation in the book referencing his time as an avenger and remembering / accessing some avengers info files, as well as how the fight at the start was concluded put me at ease they at least have some idea of the character.

The gripes about Speedy aside i thought it was a great book and recommend picking it up. I just hope they give a reason for the speedy oddness and bring him more in line with where he is supposed to be in current continuity.

I hadn’t read anything of the new scarlet spider stuff? How did they do handling his character?

New Warriors #1 Review By: John Garretson

I really liked the book. I thought Yost did a good job of providing clean introductions for all of the members. (Much better than Grevioux did with volume 4.) The dialogue seemed genuine. It had a nice timing and flow to it. (Particularly the exchanges between Hummingbird and Kane.) Nova actually made me laugh out loud during his battle with the ‘gross’ alien. (No small feat. NOTHING makes me laugh.)

I wasn’t too keen on the “I seek heroes!” line uttered by Watersnake. Cheesy and the timing of her appearance was too ridiculously coincidental in light of the preceding exchange. Other than that the writing felt fresh. The issue does nothing more than introduce the cast and hint at a future plot but it is done in a neat, concise fashion.

The art is good. I’d give it about a 7.5 out of 10. It is is colorful and bright and does a good job making you feel the atmosphere. The drawing of the characters is generally good but can be spotty at times. (I was spoiled by the amazing J. Scott Campbell variant cover.) Something about Justice’s hair seems off. I think he looked better in Avengers: Initiative.

It was somewhat surreal seeing Speedball and Justice back in action with Watersnake as a stand in Namorita, Sun Girl as a stand in (and upgrade on) Turbo and Sam Alexander as a stand in Nova. For a moment, it made me long to see a grown up Warriors team with Justice having honed his powers and leadership skills at Initiative, Speedball retaining the offensive kinetic capabilities of Penance (described in Thunderbolts as near Hulk levels) combined and used in conjunction with his absorption and redirection powers, a massively powered up post annihilation Richard Rider as Nova, Firestar returning from her stint with the X-Men and a resurrected Night Thrasher “The Living Weapon”!

They could have given the Avengers a run for their money. Oh, what could have been…. Instead, we get a slightly regressed team. Nevertheless, the new characters seem fresh and interesting. But make no mistake, I am ecstatic they are back at all! I love my New Warriors and I can’t wait to see them take it to their enemies or in the immortal words of Speedball, “Hit ’em fast. Hit ’em hard. Hit ’em ’till their mothers feel it!” Looking forward to next issue and hopefully a long, healthy run!

KNOWN TERRITORIES: GREENWICH, NEW SALEM
TARGET SPECIME: ARACELY PENALBA, aka HUMMINGBIRD
OTHER SPECIMENS: HELLSTORM, HERCULES, SCARLET WITCH
Much like the damage done to the human species by alien manipulation, an increasing number of other-dimensional hybrids and abominations have sought to dilute the human genetic destiny.  Creatures known to man as “DEMONS” or “GODS” have created a new sub-species of man almost unrecognizable—demigods, creatures of magic.

CLASSIFICATION: HOMO MERANUS/ATLANTEAN
KNOWN TERRITORIES: ATLANTIS, LEMURIA

TARGET SPECIMEN: FAIRA SAR NAMORA, aka WATER SNAKE
OTHER SPECIMENS: NAMOR
An evolutionary off-shoot of humanity caused by environmental circumstances, homo meranus has long been a threat to humanity. Their numbers have been kept in check in recent history, but they always return seeking dominion over the Earth, and the fall of man.CLASSIFICATION: INHUMAN
KNOWN TERRITORIES: ATTILAN (FORMERLY)
TARGET SPECIMEN: MARK SIM, aka HAECHI
OTHER SPECIMENS: BLACK BOLT, MEDUSA, MAXIMUS
Long has this rogue experiment of the Kree been extant, living in secret, their numbers small.  But after recent events, it would seem that the Inhumans pose the most immediate threat that man has ever seen. With their mutative Terrigen Mist unleashed within the atmosphere of Earth, the effects that Inhumanity will have on man can only serve to bring disaster even closer.

KNOWN SPECIMENS: IRON MAN, HAWKEYE
Humanity. Their potential remains limitless. A race of creatures meant to evolve into something the universe has never seen, to rise higher and soar farther than any other, but they themselves may well be their own greatest enemy. Their potential for self-destruction has long been well known, but as war approaches, the nobility in them will fight against me. They will sacrifice themselves to save the very races that would cause their destruction. I can only pray that they will see that what I do, I do to save us all.Be sure to pick up NEW WARRIORS #1 on February 19!
