New Warriors – Kings of Pain.

Someone on the New Warriors Group wanted a clean scan of the Kings of Pain annual event that the New Warriors had taken part of – and I happened to have the large poster – scanned each part – and pasted it back together as one file.

The Cancelled New Warriors series.

There was a New Warriors series that was going to be launched, but whether because of the pandemic or the backlash and ridiculed the series suffered based on the characters and their character names and general concept – or a combination of both – the series never saw the light of day. However, some art was released (see New Warriors Cancelled Series) – I figured I would also collect the three covers we saw, simply for New Warriors historical purposes.

We get a glimpse at what the New Warriors show might have been…

There has been two sides to this. One side was upset and didn’t feel like this was “New Warriors” – but rather “Squirrel Girl and Her Amazing Friends.” The other side, mentions that they had a nice mixture of New Warriors – including Speedball (who is an all time favorite) and Night Thrasher (the one who founded the New Warriors). It also included other members that came from later volumes such as Microbe and Debrii. So the only two non New Warriors was Squirrel Girl and Mr. Immortal.

I personally would have loved to have seen this become something. If any other reason – even if it was written more of a “Squirrel Girl and Her Amazing Friends” – it would have potentially made New Warriors a household name, which in turn would have stirred interest in the New Warriors, including the original volumes. And who knows what stories might have come of this? Was there plans for Silhouette? Midnight’s Fire? Chord? And other characters who are historically tied to the New Warriors! (Could we have seen a story with Namorita? Justice? Firestar?)

I guess all we will ever have is…

New Darkhawk Series in August from Marvel Comics!

There’s a catch however, if you’re expecting Chris Powell. If you read the latest Darkhawk: Heart of the Hawk you would know – Chris sacrificed himself and sent his Darkhawk gem through a portal back to Earth.

With the writing duties going to Kyle Higgins, and the artist is Juanan Ramirez, and colorist being Erick Arciniega – the team introduces a new character by the name of Connor Young, who is facing a life changing diagnosis (he’s diagnosed with multiple sclerosis) when things seem to get worse for Connor – just before he finds the amulet.

If whatever he is diagnosed with isn’t bad enough; looks like he’s sporting a black eye as well. But that’s not even the worse… check out the next page…
The crystal can only be one thing…. but man, an explosion on top of everything… but can it be….?
Yes, yes it is!

So Connor becomes the new Darkhawk and sports a new look (the helmet looks like a variation we’ve seen before) – but the body suit and arm piece are certainly different.

Higgins is quoted as saying, “He (Chris Powell) wasn’t transforming into Darkhawk,” Higgins said. “His body was swapping places with an Android housed in Null space. That’s something I really wanted to get back to with Connor– it’s a dynamic I find super fascinating. There’s quite a bit of Miracleman in there and I can’t wait to dive in and explore it, especially with Connor’s diagnosis. What does maintaining a synaptic link — and control over the android — look like when you have a neurodegenerative condition like multiple sclerosis?”

So it looks like the origin of Darkhawk is going to change again; back to something that was established in the original series (and then erased as “madness” during the Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning run of Darkhawk later). But it looks like they’re also keeping some aspects of what Dan and Andy did; [Higgins] mentioning specifically, “If readers missed the Heart of the Hawk one shot we did earlier this year, I’d recommend they check it out. All three stories connect, as Juanan and I built the final page together to chronicle the final moments of Chris Powell, as he downloads his experiences to the Datasong and the Amulet. So, what does that mean for Connor? Will he be able to access that information? And what actually happened to Chris? Those will all come along. As Connor learns more about what he’s been drafted into.”

However, Higgins also said, “There’s no Raptors in this first story, no. We’ll see what the future holds!”

Colleen Doran shares some recovered New Warriors Art on Twitter!

I want to thank Colleen Doran for allowing me to share this! (Be sure to follow Colleen Doran on Twitter!)

Colleen shared:

Thanks to artist Guy Dorian. Marvel returned my art from “Captain America and the New Warriors” to him by mistake in the 1990’s. Guy found it in a stack of art in his attic and returned it to me this week! Thanks, Guy! You’re a swell guy! Wonderful inks by Greg Adams, btw!

This is pre-digital color. What you are seeing is an old fashioned printing instruction. The red line tells the color separator that the line is to be a color hold, a line of color printed without black and white ink. This work isn’t done anymore in this way.

Darick Robertson shares some New Warriors Art on Twitter! And it’s amazing!

The Tweets are found here:

FROM THE ARCHIVES! My wife has found my original NEW WARRIORS sample pencils, that despite being awful, got me the job! I was given no script, just told to create a 2 page fight sequence between the New Warriors and Spider-Man, so all the dialogue and ‘plot’ here is me from ’92.

Here’s some of what ‘today me’ would tell ‘then me’ if I’d asked for feedback…
